Hello SMHA Family,

Now that our AGM is behind us and I have officially stepped into my role I wanted to take a moment to reach out to all of you. Although I am walking into this role during an unprecedented and difficult time, I am excited to plan for the future of our association.

I would like to begin by taking a moment to thank Harbs Bains for his dedication and commitment to this association during his time as President. You will still see him around the arenas assisting in different capacities.

As many of you may have heard PCAHA and BC Hockey’s release over the weekend stated that we can now return to Phase 3 protocols which will allow us to play games within our individual associations.  We are working hard to determine how to best organize the teams throughout our association in order to achieve this and will be providing additional details and instruction once finalized.

As mentioned prior to being elected, I would like to see all members within our association working together for everyone’s benefit.  In saying this, I would like to invite all of you to take part in our upcoming town hall meetings held via zoom on December 9th at 7pm and/or January 6th at 7pm.   During the meeting we will discuss our next steps for the season as well as answer any questions you may have. We encourage you to submit your questions prior to the meeting which will assist us in providing you with a detailed response. Please submit to secretary@surreyminorhockey.com at least two days prior to the meeting.  I want to ask everyone to be mindful that we are in this together and during this time of uncertainty we each need to do our part to make the best out of this season for all of our children.  We look forward to hear hearing any ideas or solutions to the many challenges we currently face. My goal is to offer these meetings monthly on a virtual platform so we can all stay connected as an association.

We have had some unfortunate situations at the arena that have resulted in suspensions to some of our members due to aggressive behaviour towards City of Surrey employees. I would like to remind everyone that it is in our association’s best interest to work with the City as we navigate through these times.  Remember that the staff at the arenas are simply doing what they are directed to do by their superiors.  If you have a problem at the arena, please do not react negatively towards the employees but rather contact your division lead and we will follow up with the City.  Please keep in mind that everyone is feeling the stress, fear, and uncertainty during this pandemic so we must be vigilant in supporting each other in order to get through it.

If we all do our part and try to stay positive, I have faith that we will get through this and be able to move forward in strengthening and growing our association.
